As part of its awareness-raising programmes, Nuha Cultural and Social Council in A’ali hosted a legal awareness seminar entitled “Joint Assets Between Spouses” on the evening of Monday, 5 October 2026.
The seminar was delivered by Ms. Maryam Al Ruwaie, Director of the Tafawuq Consulting Centre for Development, in coordination with Bahrain Women Union.
During the discussion, Ms. Al Ruwaie addressed the legal and social aspects of the concept of joint financial assets between spouses, highlighting the importance of organising these assets in a way that promotes family stability and safeguards the rights of all family members.
She explained that joint assets refer to the earnings and wealth accumulated by spouses through their joint efforts during married life. These contributions may include paid employment outside the home as well as domestic and caregiving work performed by women within the family. She emphasised that assets owned by either spouse before marriage are not included in this concept.
Ms. Al Ruwaie also reviewed various international experiences in addressing marital wealth. While some countries adopt the principle of complete financial independence between spouses, others apply systems for sharing assets acquired during marriage. She highlighted the role of such legislation in reducing family disputes and ensuring women’s economic and social protection, particularly in cases of divorce or the death of a spouse.
This event forms part of the Tafawuq Consulting Centre’s ongoing efforts to address emerging social issues and encourage dialogue on best practices that respect the specific characteristics of Bahraini society while keeping pace with legal and social developments.
